From Spices to Stories: How We Celebrated Black History Month at Sutherland Quarters

17th October 2025

Last week, our community came together to honour Black History Month in the most vibrant and engaging way. Led by our incredible Community Engagement Officer, Monique Arowojolu, Sutherland Quarters hosted a week-long festival that celebrated culture, cuisine and creativity while sparking important conversations about history and heritage.

Residents explored African and Caribbean cuisines, sampled spices and snacks from across the diaspora, and discovered the stories behind them. The cabin was transformed into a hub of activity and learning, filled with music of Black origin, posters of Black British pioneers, and books celebrating Black authors and leaders. A special collaboration with Horsham Library brought an inspiring display of Black literature, with the Little Leaders series proving a particular favourite among families and younger residents.

The week ended on a high note with a community film screening of Black Panther. For many residents, it was their first time seeing the film, and the atmosphere was one of excitement and pride. Popcorn in hand, neighbours gathered to enjoy a story that celebrates identity, strength and unity. The playlist for the evening also included a heartfelt tribute to the late D’Angelo, whose music added soul to the celebration.

Monique’s passion and dedication shone through every detail. Her thoughtful approach ensured that every resident could take part meaningfully, learning, sharing, and connecting over the rich cultural contributions of Black communities across the world.

At Caridon, we are proud to support events that celebrate diversity, encourage learning, and strengthen community bonds. Our CSR commitment goes beyond housing; it’s about creating spaces where inclusion, understanding and pride in our shared history can thrive.

A huge thank you to Monique and everyone at Sutherland Quarters who made this celebration one to remember. Together, we’re building communities where every story matters.
